April 2008
Dear Friend-
What a month! It is a long trip half way around the world. I had such an incredible experience and learned so much about the people of Vietnam. After several days of jet-lagging around the house, Savannah asked me what impacted me the most about the trip. Easy answer but hard solution. It is the oppression of the people of Vietnam. While their economic and political status can be discussed, it is their spiritual oppression that overwhelmed me and my colleagues. In so many faces I saw emptiness, hopelessness and yes, darkness.
There were only a few times on the trip that I shared with someone that had some reference point for Christ. Most had no idea who I was talking about.
We were required to turn in our passports at each hotel where we stayed. Those hotels are then required to send a list to the government each night, detailing their guests. They always know where you are. That means that doing mass evangelism and giving away Bibles in public places in dangerous; not so much dangerous for us, but for the missionaries and local pastors with whom we met and worked. Twice, while out in rural areas, we were able to give away as many gospels as we had on us. Those were beautiful times and we pray that God will bless that small seed-planting effort.
The rest of the time, evangelism was strictly personal. We prayed for divine encounters, and then would talk to people, looking for signs that God was working in their lives. We needed to do our best and quickest assessment to determine if we thought they would turn us in to the government. Once we followed those parameters, we could talk about spiritual things and, perhaps, give them a tract, gospel or New Testament.
The trip was beautiful and hard and the missionary task is overwhelming there. I was encouraged to meet both with missionaries and with three Vietnamese pastors. Our IMB missionary friend, K, is scheduled to teach fourteen new church leaders in seminary classes this year.
I was also humbled by how frustrating the evangelism can be there, and how easy it should be for us here. We won’t be arrested, or tortured, or kicked out of the country for sharing our faith in the US . The worst thing anyone here can do is tell us, “No.” Far too often, that enough is a barrier to sharing what we claim is the most important thing in the world.
Here is a link to a video of the pictures that I took along the way. http://animoto.com/play/5dhSg7qUNlztT7hexlW9Ww
With much love,
Brent & Savannah Sorrels
