“Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples.” Psalm 96:3

  Dear Friends:

In January we shared about culture and the process of learning about different cultures. This past week Savannah had the special opportunity to go to a nail salon (thanks to her husband). After returning home she noted that instead of a quiet pedicure that she has had previously in Vietnamese salons, this salon was filled with loud and gossipy “American” women. Language barrier can often make conversation minimal or nonexistent. Imagine what it does when trying to read the Bible.

Brent also had the opportunity to give a Bible to Mrs. P., an East Indian woman whose family we have intentionally befriended. Earlier in the year, she had received a gospel in Hindi. She was able to read and understand Hindi well enough. But during the East Indian Bible study (see below), Brent learned from other Indians that that her heart language was Gujarati (which is “native to the Indian state of Gujarat, and is its chief language, ….[t]here are about 46 million speakers of Gujarati worldwide, making it the 26th most spoken native language in the world.” from wikipedia.org) Having a few gospels in Gujarati, Brent took her one at her restaurant. When she saw the gospel, she exclaimed, “That is my language!” She was so excited to have a gospel in her heart language.

After months of working and meeting with two East Indian believers, Brent was able meet with them in a house to study the Bible. They had invited Hindu friends to gather and hear Brent teach. There were 9 people present and all but Brent had a Hindu background. Brent began teaching on the creation and scripture as authorative because a person with a Hindu worldview would readily accept another “god” to worship without understanding the supremacy of our God.

Brent will leave on April 5th to go to Vietnam on a mission trip. It has been exciting to prepare for such a trip. Just planning for his traveling to Vietnam has already given him opportunities to talk about his visit to people in our community. His Bible studies continue. One girl is a new believer and is praying about her baptism. Coming from an Asian worldview, her being baptized without her family’s consent may be considered a very selfish and prideful thing. We are praying for her to have opportunites to share Christ with her family so they will also desire to follow Him and be baptised, as well. Another woman is closer to understanding Christ’s love for her but still struggles with her Buddhist beliefs.

  Our prayer requests are:
  1. Pray for Brent’s upcoming trip to Vietnam. We are thankful to those that have given so sacrifically towards his expenses. If you desire to give towards his trip, please email us at outreach2pa@sbcglobal.net and we will share details. Brent’s prayer is that the trip will help him understand the Vietnamese people better and learn more about how to share Christ with them.
  2. Pray for the Bible study with the East Indians. Pray that they will desire to meet together on a regular basis. Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide them in understanding and truth about God. Praise Him for bringing together such a group of people with open hearts. Pray for A and S, the Indian Christians we met through gospel distribution last year. Pray for the P family as we continue talk to them about Jesus.
  3. Pray for the work with the Vietnamese. While there has been progress, it can feel at times slow and circular. Pray that more translators will desire to work and help share the Word. Pray for T as she prays about baptism. Pray for X as she contemplates accepting Christ.
  4. Praises for the number of requests that have come in from volunteer teams to help us during the spring and summer months. We have 3 teams committed to coming to work alongside us and are speaking with several more.
  4. Pray for us as we continue to seek out those that are hungry for Christ. Pray for the health of our family.
  With much love,

  Brent & Savannah Sorrels
