Subject: Cameroon Update

Dear Friends,

We wanted to update you on happenings here in the past 24 hours.

Tuesday afternoon, Marta and I were taking a Cameroonian friend home after =
work. She lives 12 kilometers away in what we thought was a part of town u=
naffected by all the rioting going on. After dropping her off in front of =
her house, we started to make a U-Turn when we noticed a large group of peo=
ple looking up the street. The next thing we knew, people were running in =
our direction away from a group of police who were doing riot control. Sud=
denly, several tear gas canisters were lobbed and exploded about 50 feet in=
front of our truck. People really began to scatter at that point. Needle=
ss to say, we quickly turned around and left the scene. We made it home wi=
thout incident.

This morning (Wednesday) I headed over to the office but stopped off at our=
other center just up the street from where we live. Things seemed normal =
on the street, there were even a few Taxis running. However, about 9 AM, a=
ll traffic stopped and we began to receive word that there were burning of =
tires and a car and mobs gathering just up the road.

A group of SIL missionaries got stuck downtown this morning. They were sur=
rounded by a mob for awhile and ended being able to take refuge in a friend=
's yard. They could not get out and ended up having to be escorted home by=
a security service here in Cameroon. They were all safe but a bit shook u=
p.

The American Embassy in advising everyone to stay home, make sure that they=
have plenty of supplies for a week and even pack a bag in case of evacuati=
on. SIL offices were closed and the boys schools are off tomorrow.

This evening we were told that the water will be cut at midnight for about =
three days and that the electricity may be off also for part of that time. =
As of now, we don't how long this situation will last. We do know that th=
e same type of rioting is happening in several other cities throughout Came=
roon.

Please pray that a peaceful solution would take place quickly and that thin=
gs would get back to normal soon. Praise the Lord that we are all safe so =
far.

God is good all the time!

Ken and Marta Morton
