Subject: Fw: Chad in the News

Teresa or Linda, I just opened my e mail, receiving this message from Ken
Morton in Cameroon, I wanted to get it on prayer chain, Thanks Doris

Dear Friends,

Many of you have probably seen some of the news about Chad and the fighting
that has been going on there. Last week rebel groups made up of a coalition
of smaller groups opposed to the present government crossed the desert from
the east heading for the capital of Ndjemena. They arrived late Friday and
fighting broke out in earnest. The US embassy issued evacuation notices for
all US citizens and expatriots living and working in Cameroon, especially in
the Ndjemena area.

For most of you, this conflict is half a world away. But for us, it is up
front and real. Because Cameroon is a relatively stable country bordering
on Chad, many of the evacuees are coming here. SIL has a large work in
Chad, and when the notice came to evacuate, most of them came here.
Thankfully, they got out of the city before the heavy fighting started. The
French military did a great job of protecting them and helping arrange air
transport out of the country. They were first flown to Libreville, in
Gabon, where they then arranged commercial transport to Cameroon. Because
our center has a large amount of guest housing, they are staying here in
Yaounde. We currently have over 40 members of the SIL Chad branch here, as
well as some other mission personnel who evacuated with them. More are
expected in the next few days.

These folks arrived here after three days of traveling. They brought out
only the minimum of belongings, a few clothes, laptops, some money, and their
lives. They left everything else behind. This places us in the unique
position to provide some of the things they are lacking. A place to sleep,
basic transportation, cell phones so they can communicate with their friends
and families, internet access to keep them connected, and most importantly
fellowship and love.

Pray for us as we minister to these displaced colleagues. Plans are for
them to stay here for at least a month, then to evaluate the situation in
Chad and possibly to return. The reports of looting going on in the capital
city do not give much hope that things will be as they were when they left.
Most of them will return to find everything gone, their homes pillaged, and
some of their friends and colleagues gone.

This is a stressful time for all of them and us. Please pray that God would
encourage them in ways that we can't.

More to come later.

Ken
