  January 2008

  Happy New Year! We truly enjoyed spending the holidays with our families. It is a lot of travel for our family but worth it. We did return home only to have sick little ones for the past two weeks, which is not so much fun.

  During our trip, Nathaniel and Mason discovered a rather delightful bowl of Reece’s mini peanut butter cups that their grandmother had left just at their reach. Nathaniel got some and began to eat. Mason got his fair share but had no idea that he needed to remove the outer wrappings before eating. Luckily he wasn’t a fan of the paper and came to me to get it out. We do not often have candy in our house – much less a free-for-all bowl ready for the taking. It later occurred to me that working with a new cultural group is rather like eating a new product. Sometimes we have observed the cultural differences and know to take off the wrapper, but other times we just push right ahead – paper and all.

  Our partner churches are working with the Hispanics which is a group we are very familiar with thanks to our time in Costa Rica. However, we have personally focused on the Vietnamese and East Indian peoples. First, the work is very slow as we are outsiders working to be accepted by very closed cultures. Second, learning can be hard as too many questions can be perceived as intrusive. Finally, language can be a barrier as they may or may not have learned English. Brent is learning Vietnamese and hopes to have a deeper understanding after his trip to Vietnam in April. There are at least 415 East Indian languages; many different ones depending upon your region in India. S and A, who are Indian Christians that we met through gospel distribution, are working with us to reach their own people group.

  We seek your prayers for the following items:
  1.         our continued learning of both the Vietnamese and East Indian cultures and Brent’s Vietnamese language learning;
  2.         finding and discipling people from both people groups;
  3.         volunteer teams to come assist us with this work in March, throughout the summer and fall;
  4. our health as it is really difficult to keep up with ministry with a sick family; and
  5. praises for those partners that have made financial commitments to our ministry for this year.

  With much love,

  Brent & Savannah Sorrels
